Apra on her first Birthday

Apra on her first Birthday

The 9th January – a very special day! Apra is now exactly one year old and we are celebrating her very first birthday!

Before Apra woke up this morning, Ramona and I were talking about our memories of the day when she was born. How we were listening to her heartbeat, amplified over the machine next to Ramona’s bed, the sensors on her belly, as close to our baby as possible. ‘Padam, padam, padam,…’The whole night long we had heard this sound, knowing it is the sign that our baby was well. We actually had a great time in the hospital, looking forward, waiting and imagining. The moments we first saw her, in the late evening, just fresh out of the belly, her eyes still puffy but a smile already on her face!

Now she is one year old and we can hardly believe it! It was a wonderful year in which she grew a lot and started discovering the world. But of course, we also remember Ammaji, who had been to the hospital with us and whose biggest wish had come true with the birth of our daughter. It is now one month that she is not with us anymore and we are missing her horribly, especially today.

Anyway, we are not in the mood for the big celebration that we had imagined before Ammaji passed and then there is another factor: Apra is not feeling well. She has been ill for the past week, coughing badly and after some days diarrhea added to the problems, causing sore bottoms and pain each time she had to go to toilet. After a visit to the doctor, we started giving her medicine but I can tell you that is one of the most difficult things I have ever done! This little girl just does not want to drink her medicine! All tricks failed, she just tastes her medicine in everything – on biscuits, in honey, in water, in yoghurt, in chocolate – as soon as the tip of her tongue touched the bait, she would turn her head away and shut her lips tight. Holding her and practically forcing her to drink made her cry and throw it all up. She had started recognizing the word ‘medicine’ and we had to start paraphrasing so that she wouldn’t start crying beforehand… the last days were quite challenging as you can imagine.

In the end four adults had to dance around her, singing, jumping, playing, making funny noises and from time to time slip a fingertip of medicine into her mouth. It took one hour each time to feed her a little cap full of medicine and if anybody had filmed our efforts, you would have been very entertained now. The important thing is however that she is now finally getting better.

While we may not have a very big celebration, we will definitely celebrate and started already by distributing new pullovers to the children of the school. In the evening we are going to have a nice dinner and of course a cake. We will sing, Apra will unpack presents and maybe we will listen to some music of our friends. A peaceful and beautiful evening – let’s see what Apra will think of it!

happy birthday my little Angel!
