Khajuraho - The Kamasutra Temples

The Khajuraho Temples site is famous not only among tourists from abroad but also among Indian tourists who come to admire the wonderful art of this World Heritage Site. Its sculpture and architecture capture the attention of the visitors. The temples are built by the Chandela dynasty around thousand years before Christ. Of the 85 temples that had been built only 20 remain standing. These can be divided into three main groups, Western, Eastern and Southern. Architecturally these temples are unique. Due to the detailed sculptural depiction of erotic motives the temples are known as the Kamasutra temples. However eroticism is not the only topic. Khajuraho has not received the deserved attention for its significant contribution to the religious art of India – there are literally hundreds of exquisite images on the interior and exterior walls of the shrines that show the pictorial richness of Hinduism. Visiting this impressive site is an extraordinary experience.
