Varanasi -
The holy pilgrimage town
|
Varanasi, the place of Lord Shiva, is the holy
pilgrim city of the Hindus. In their belief it is the
oldest city of world. Take a walk along Varanasi’s ghats,
go down the stairs that are leading down to Ganges and
that are the place for the morning rituals of thousands
of Hindus who are bathing themselves with the holy
water. By making a boat trip you can have a wonderful
view on the city and on its burning places where a
never-ending fire burns day and night for the funerals
on the riverside. Hindus believe that whoever dies in
the holy city is free from the cycle of birth and
rebirth. Varanasi is also a centre of art and music and
you can enjoy wonderful concerts of Indian classical
music there. Near to Varanasi, only ten kilometres away,
you will find Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first
discourse after his enlightenment.
