yoga for cancer patients and survivors is sometimes smiled upon with the statement ‘Yoga cannot help you get rid of your breast cancer’. It may be true that yoga cannot remove damaged cells from your body but it helps you in many different ways.
There are many different cancer types and before starting yoga for cancer treatment, each patient has to know which area of the body can be exercised with.
This is how we do not recommend certain yoga postures for you. Every cancer patient has individual needs and different postures would be recommended for everyone. Please consult your doctor before exercising.
There are many poses that are helpful because they stretch your body tissues, soothe the nervous system and gently massage the areas where you feel pain. Be gentle with your body, especially with the areas where you feel strain and tension while doing the exercises. You can build strength for your muscles with slow but continuous movements.
Most of all yoga helps you to cope with the mental and emotional changes that every cancer patient experiences, no matter if they have breast cancer, lung cancer or fallopian tube cancer. Skin cancer patients also face anxiety and fear. Cervix cancer patients also have problems to get sleep and to relax. Yoga helps to build strength to continue the battle against cancer and yoga gives you inner peace to face cancer treatment methods that weaken your body.
Yoga offers support for cancer patients through breathing and meditation techniques which help to accept the situation and the own body as it is. stress is released through stretching and bending your body, you get calm and find back to your balance while exercising and thus get rid of depressions and fear. You learn again to feel really good in your body.
Of course yoga is not a substitute for medical treatment and you should take advice from your doctor whether yoga exercise is recommended for different areas of your body or not. Should any yoga instructor advice you not to continue your cancer treatment but only remain with yoga, please search for another, more responsible yoga teacher.
Try yoga for another step in your fight against cancer!
Cancer survivors are welcome to share their experiences in the form of comments and let others know how yoga helped them.
