Violence and Riots - what do you get from Destruction? - 1 May 09

Swami ji

Today we went to have dinner out and while we were waiting for our pizza, we were talking about today’s holiday. It is the 1st May, Labour Day here in Germany and Thomas and Iris told that each year on this day people protest in groups against government or the social system. And often they also become violent in this, destroying national property, putting vehicles on fire and breaking other people’s things. They do not get anything from this. Many people can get injured and hurt and there is a big financial loss. But they continue doing this each year.

I know this happens in each country but I don’t understand why some people have a destructive mind. They even have fun in this. It seems as if it is their game and joy when something is broken and destroyed and somebody is hurt, injured and has financial loss.

When I was in India I read in newspaper that government now made a law especially for these cases of violent protest. The group or organization which is responsible for this and the people who are arrested on spot have to pay the value of all property that they destroyed. We see this many times and many places. You don’t know why these people do this. If they cannot create something, make something, why do they destroy? I wish that people will raise their consciousness more and do not seek their fun in harming others.

Ben Rogers stated it well. You cannot put out fire with fire. In other words, retaliating against a problem using similar tactics just serves to aggravate the problem and the struggle. I like the idea of a "peaceful warrior" that was created in American Indian tribes. You use the brutality and violence of your aggressor to peacefully make them collapse in their efforts. Rather than attacking back, you use the peace and love in your heart to show them a higher way. "Kill them with kindness," so to speak.

Thank you for words and the space around them.

As a career activist I have considerable experience with the collective anger that circulates protests. And I have long felt justified in action, seeing the suffering that is created by those we fight. I do however think this is an interesting point. Perhaps fire cannot be put out with fire.

Words of Wisdom

  • Sex

Don’t set the moral standards for another person higher than for yourself!

    Source
  • Magic

You learn in school how long it takes for light to travel from the sun to us and how much power it takes for a rocket to go to the moon. But still you believe that any man has the power to make gold out of nothing or harm you with his black magic?

    Source
  • Cheating

You did not tell your partner that you are cheating but you are trying to tell yourself that he or she would be fine with that. Anytime you do that, whenever you cheat your partner, you actually first cheat yourself with this lie.

    Source
  • Body

What is special in any part of the body? Everybody has the same body parts. You do not need to do extra effort for hiding anything and not for exhibiting, either. Why can’t we just be normal and natural?

    Source
  • Superstition

Superstitious people lose a big part of their freedom! They cannot take any decision on their own but have kept their minds a prison of their superstition! They have sold their intelligence to this nonsense! They could be so much happier in their lives without superstition!

  • Silence

Giving unpleasant answers can be avoided by not answering at all.

  • Vegetarian

Why do you eat Pig and Cow but not your Dog?

    Source
  • Body

Bleach your face with ‘fair and lovely’ cream, get slim and tall with pills, make your vagina fair and tight – it is not this what makes you a beautiful woman!

    Source
  • Guilt

You want to live in guilt. If you do not want to, you can come out of it. You can just leave it and decide not to be in guilt. But being in this feeling is easier than making the decision of not being in guilt.

    Source
  • Forgiveness

Forgive another one and give him a possibility to learn and to improve.

    Source
  • Belief

If you know that something is impossible but you still believe, you either want to close your eyes from reality or you are stupid. You will keep on cheating yourself and others - or will end up disappointed!

    Source
  • Sex

Equality does not mean that you give sexual freedom to women and control, blame, accuse and judge men!

    Source
  • Rituals

Does a mother need a rosary to remember her child? Does a wife need to sit in a certain pose or condition to think of her husband? If love is there, you don’t need to do any effort for meditation, it takes place itself. You won’t find God, who is love, with rituals, ceremonies and donations but with love.

  • Pets

We create an animal for our entertainment and give it pain for the rest of its life. This is not taking care of nature, this is not how we should live. We should think more of the animal than of us. Does the animal like living like this? Can I give the animal everything that it would have in free nature, too?

    Source
  • Vegetarian

You are what you eat. If you eat meat, you take the animal's energy into your body and thus people become more and more like animals.

  • Rules

I don’t like rules but I like discipline. It makes your will power strong.

  • Attachment

Real Sadhus have fully renounced from worldly life and don’t ask money of tourists!

There are no Siddhis or supernatural powers. I challenge anybody to show me those powers and their effect, good or bad. Can you tell me the lottery numbers or can you kill me only by the force of your mind? Try it.

Karma is in many ways just a very easy way for irresponsible people to accept bad events and not try to change anything in their behavior or their thinking.
