Radhashtami - Birthday Celebrations of Goddess Radha - 28 Aug 09

Ashram

Today is a very special day. In India it is called Radhashtami. It is the birthday of Radha who, according to Hindu mythology, is the lover, inspiration and energy of Lord Krishna. Especially in our town this day is celebrated even more than Krishna’s birthday. Krishna’s birthday was fifteen days ago and all over the world this day is celebrated. Just in Vrindavan the celebration of Radhashtami is even bigger. They make music and a procession and dance in the streets and thousands of people go out into the street to celebrate the Goddess Radha. They give gifts to each other, eat sweets and sing ‘happy Birthday Radha’.

This is also the birthday of Swami Haridas who lived around 600 years ago and who was a great spiritual soul and musician living in Vrindavan. He loved Krishna very much and Krishna loved him. His poems are very popular and touching.

And today is also the birthday of my grandfather. With this nice combination of dates I also chose this day in 1997 to go into the cave for the following three years and 108 days. Of course this is a day of celebration at the Ashram. Many spiritual people use to come and we have a conference, a celebration with singing and dancing and a Bhandara with many people.

It is the first time in my life that I am not in Vrindavan on this day. Purnendu sent pictures from the celebration and I saw them and imagined I was there to share this energy and enjoy the celebration. Ramona asked me if I was sad not to be there and I answered ‘No, I am not sad but of course I am thinking of Vrindavan and remember this energy. This is how I can be there in spirit and enjoy.’ I have made this plan early and decided not to be in Vrindavan in that time. I am happy here, too, and I feel like it is nice if I am there but I am not fixed with this idea. I don’t have to be there just because I was there for my whole life. I have the ability to accept change in my life and to make another decision and enjoy it.

Words of Wisdom

  • Happiness

Detachment is when you get happy by giving.

    Source
  • Cheating

You did not tell your partner that you are cheating but you are trying to tell yourself that he or she would be fine with that. Anytime you do that, whenever you cheat your partner, you actually first cheat yourself with this lie.

    Source
  • Decision

Sometimes the outcome is simply not in our control, so stop thinking about what could have happened if you had taken another decision.

    Source
  • Religion

Isn’t it strange that it is offending if a normal person shows his genitals in public while religious men get worldwide fame for it?

    Source
  • Ego

There is a thin line in between healthy pride and too much ego. Everybody needs some ego and everybody should be proud of himself. Without ego or pride you cannot survive. You cannot exist without ego because you need your ego to identify yourself.

    Source
  • God

If you want to get in touch with god, why do you need an agent for that? Make direct contact through love.

    Source
  • Truth

The truth is nowhere outside. Search in your love and in your honesty, there you will find truth.

    Source
  • God

Belief in god is not a comfort after tragic events like rape!

    Source
  • Religion

Religion is entertainment for the rich and not necessary for the poor. You have to do ceremonies, go to the temple, give donations, that all costs money. Poor people think of food, only well-off people think of religion.

    Source
  • Hope

Hope is always good and it is part of having a positive attitude. Believing that the impossible will happen is either closing the eyes in front of reality or just stupid.

    Source
  • Religion

Sometimes religion is like poison. Look at these people who gather others around themselves, making up their own ‘religion’ by interpreting some scripture in their own way and create rules. It steals the freedom of the mind. You need to know yourself what is right for you and everybody has different ideas of what is good or bad, right or wrong.

    Source
  • Psychology

Bad luck or good luck are simply a manipulation of your mind, a psychological effect for those who believe in it.

    Source
  • Life

Nobody knows what will happen in the future. If we knew what would happen tomorrow, the whole mystery, the adventure, the surprise and the beauty of life would be gone!

    Source
  • Sharing

Sharing has a double effect: it decreases sadness and increases happiness!

    Source
  • God

After accidents some people believe it happened due to their sins and bad Karma but God saved them. Well, he saved your life but you do have broken bones. If this guy could keep you from dying, why could he not save your bones from being crushed? Was he too busy? Did he think it would look unrealistic that you have an accident and don’t even break something? Or did he really think ‘Man, you got some bad Karma over there! Not bad enough for dying but at least a bone fracture!’

    Source
  • Attachment

If you can enjoy giving joy to somebody else, it is detachment!

    Source
  • Love

You cannot buy anybody’s love. If you want love, give love. The world of love is very different from this material world. Not even a millionaire can buy someone’s love. Maybe their body but not their love.

    Source
  • Emotions

Words have limits. Love and Emotions are endless.

    Source
  • Children

The only good reason for the wish to have a child is because you have love in your heart and you want to share it with a child. You want to give a child the happiness that you feel when you are loved and when you can love someone.

    Source
  • Scriptures

Religious scriptures are only pieces of literature that have been noted down by people in the past and should not have any relevance or importance today. Read them word by word and you will get to know their crazy and cruel content.
