Why do Religions Emphasize Celibacy - 7 Mar 10

Why did religions make so many restrictions for sex? They have to have an opinion on it because it is an important part of life. So how come so many religions want to restrict it, want to forbid it?

I believe that is because it is the most beautiful and most enjoyable feeling to be united in love as close as it is possible. It is just natural to enjoy this. And that is why religions try to gain power over it. This is how monks and Brahmacharis try to or should live without having sex: it shows that they have gained a victory over this feeling. They actually build their ego on being stronger than natural feelings like this. They want to be stronger. What they don’t realize is that, as a human person with a mind and intelligence, everyone is able to control their sexual urges best, when they can also express them in the right situations.

We all know about the cases about abuse of children by monks, priests and other spiritual people who are supposed to live a celibate life. You cannot suppress nature, this is the result! And why would especially Hinduism actually forbid sex for their spiritual people? If you think of those people whom they call their saints and who are everywhere regarded as very spiritual people like Ramkrishna Paramahansa or Kabir, you will realize that they all had wives. They and many others were married and had children! And not only them. If you see sex as a sin then have a look at those whom you are worshipping. Lord Ram was married to Sita, Shiva to Parvati and Krishna had Radha. All these Gods had women in their lives and had children, too, so they were not sleeping in separate beds. How could this concept develop so strongly? It is just unnatural. Religions need to accept this.

I think you are spot on with this insight, Swami. Sex is as strong of an urge as hunger. Many spiritual teachings have recommended that you learn how to be a master over these desires in order to prove your strength-- with fasting and celibacy. But what is the point in proving that you can control an urge? We should learn how to express our natural urges with a spiritual mindset and energy.

I was going to be a nun when I was little. I thought so, then I'd never have to deal with stupid boys and relationships and everything else that was a part of the world except religion. But, then I grew up and realized balance is better.

Very good article. I especially noticed the part about brahmacaris actually building their egos, rather than transcending the ego, by "showing off" how advanced and renounced they are. I have experienced this, when I was a Hare Krishna monk almost 30 years ago, for a couple of years, and another insight I got was that if you try hard to be a celibate, the result is often that you get extremely fixated on sex, but in a negative way. Saying NO to sex all the time, continuously, which in the long run means saying no to love, no to life, no to intense ecstasy.

Words of Wisdom

  • Celibacy

Why should sex be forbidden? Can sex, being physically united in love, keep you from being in higher consciousness? On the contrary, suppressing your sexual feelings does not bring you closer to God!

    Source
  • God

I won’t have a problem with your god if he doesn’t think that women are less intelligent, inauspicious and less worth than men, as it is written in every religion’s books.

    Source
  • Followers

The fact that millions of people follow something is no proof that this action is good. Many people followed Hitler, too, but you cannot say that he was right!

    Source
  • God

The scriptures of many religions tell the reader that God is beyond intelligence, beyond arguments and you cannot get to know him by discussing or talking. So why do you even try?

    Source
  • Beauty

You don’t need to pretend to be younger than you are. Don’t you see the beauty in so many old people? Your beauty doesn’t come from the outside and doesn’t change if you have a few wrinkles. Be who you are, you are beautiful!

    Source
  • Responsibility

You are not responsible for everything and everybody. Relax, lean back and watch what others are doing. It is fine, enjoy whatever comes!

  • Sex

Why is a woman’s virginity or her sexual purity called her honour?

    Source
  • Personal

I welcome, not only in my home but in my life, those people who either don’t have any expectations or whose expectations I can fulfill. I want people in my life who respect my feelings and care for my happiness as well as their own happiness. I apply a filter at the entrance to my heart, too, so that I can let those in who will make me happy and whom I can make happy.

Love is the only supernatural power that exists and we all have access to it. You just need to open your heart and let it flow.

  • Negativity

Our negativity lives on our back. It is difficult for us to see but we need to explore it. We can easily see the back of another person. Work on seeing and reducing your own negativity.

  • Parenting

If you only ate when you were hungry, you would never have a problem with obesity. Adults and also children get hungry naturally. Don’t eat and don’t let them eat for their entertainment, from boredom or from hunger in their thoughts and eyes.

    Source
  • God

People say children die of hunger in this world because of their Karma. God should not save them, they have to go through it. Why is God such a partial person that he saves some people from their Karma and not others?

It is your own decision how you want to spend your life. You can live a true and honest life. Take your decision and have the courage!

  • Food

Make one meal a day a meeting point, a ritual for the whole family together.

  • Self-Confidence

You should have enough confidence in yourself and your actions to know that what you do is right. Do your best, with love and your full effort and you have the possibility to be happy.

  • God

If God is almighty, if God has a big plan according to which things happen in this world, why doesn’t he just make peace on the planet, feed everyone, finish diseases, take out violence of people and give everyone enough knowledge and brain so that the human race could survive happily and in love without overcrowding the planet or destroying it?

I won’t have a problem with your god if he makes clear that poverty, hunger, war and rape is not happening by his wish.
