Of course the topic of the castes is interesting for people who come here from the west. children there learn in school about it and are told that nowadays it is officially forbidden. And yes, officially society is not anymore divided in castes, different ‘levels’. But this system is rooted in this society. You might not notice it very much in big cities like Delhi or Mumbai as you might feel it if you spend some time in a small village but even in the cities it is still in people’s minds.
I said that it is important for me that the children at our school learn that they are all the same, that they are all loved in the same way, without any difference. Some people would never sit and eat together with a person from a low caste as many of our children are. But they all sit together and eat together, higher castes and lower castes. Because they are not different from each other.
Purnendu was asked how the people in Vrindavan think about it. He replied that of course there are some conservative people who are against it and some people who fully support it but many people say that it is good what we are doing but in their mind they feel that it is somehow strange or not right. This is how the caste system is still today in our society and we need to work against this.
