What is a Brother? - 15 Jul 08

Yesterday I wrote about family relations and today something came into my mind. In one of our scriptures, Ram Charit Manas, there is a definition of what a brother is.

What is a brother today, in our world? Someone who will share the heritage with you. We are brothers, we have to share, we fight about it and then our paths go separate ways. It is very often like this.

The definition in the scripture does not talk about sharing the heritage. No, in this scripture it is said that a brother, if he is of the same blood or not, will share your hard times with you. A brother is that one who comes in difficult times and says: “You are not alone. I am standing there with you and for you. I will share your pain and trouble. You are not alone.” This is the real relation between brothers. A brother is there all the time for you and gives you a shoulder whenever you need it. And you also need him in happy times. Otherwise who will celebrate with you if not your brother? And I am very happy and proud of my relation with my brothers.

I had a day full of healing sessions and tomorrow I will have a lot of work, too, not only in Vilnius but also in Kaunas, a town which is about 100 kilometres away from here. We will go there for the afternoon. Today we were at a wonderful place for dinner. It is a vegetarian restaurant which cooks fully without eggs, onion or garlic. It was delicious!

I like this definition of brother. Sometimes our real, blood brothers clash with us, we don't agree on things, and they cause us strife. It's sad, but many people choose not to associate much with their real brothers after they have grown up. But the good thing is that, throughout life, you can still meet people who are like family to you! Even in late adulthood or old age, you could meet a soul mate and friend who makes you feel at home and treats you like family. There is always room for more family in my life.

I have many brothers, I am so grateful for them.

I think that what you are saying is really lovely and important Swami Ji and I wanted to tell you that it has touched me as simple and obvious as it may be. Reading this has left me smiling.

Words of Wisdom

  • Food

Make one meal a day a meeting point, a ritual for the whole family together.

    Source
  • Emotions

Don’t be shy to sing when you feel like it. It is a wonderful expression of your emotions and it opens the fifth chakra, the communication chakra.

    Source
  • Relationship

Strangely enough, communication works better with different culture and language!

  • Yoga

Karma Yoga is when you do something and then forget it. Whatever you do, just offer it to god and don't keep any expectation of getting something in return. That is Karma Yoga.

  • Responsibility

Don't take everyone else's responsibility on your own shoulders! You cannot take it for long, your shoulders are not made for that! Be happy, that will help others and yourself!

  • Happiness

Never skip a reason for a celebration!

  • Identity

Why do we need to pretend to be who we are not?

  • Ego

Ego can make you blind so that you are not able to see the truth which will affect your decisions.

    Source
  • Religion

There is proof in the scriptures that shows that the caste system is deeply based in Hinduism. We need to change this religious belief in order to stop the caste system.

    Source
  • Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem lets people worry about what others think of them. Don't try to be perfect in your action and reaction. You are perfect as you are.

  • Pets

We create an animal for our entertainment and give it pain for the rest of its life. This is not taking care of nature, this is not how we should live. We should think more of the animal than of us. Does the animal like living like this? Can I give the animal everything that it would have in free nature, too?

  • Religion

Isn’t it crazy how religion is often only a way to manipulate people? Just tell people often enough that something is God’s wish and they will believe it!

    Source
  • Scriptures

If you follow outdated scriptures, you would have to kill a ridiculous amount of people in our daily lives, most of the population would have a ‘painful doom’ and women would behave and be treated very wrong. It just does not fit anymore.

  • God

If you experience fear, it doesn’t make me afraid. If you eat something, it does not fill my stomach. In the same way, I don’t believe in God just because you do!

Religious leaders act as if God is their property and they are the ones to distribute the connection. But they are not the brokers of God. You don’t need to pay them commission to establish the connection. You can just dial in yourself.

  • Responsibility

Everybody’s situation is very individual. If I tell you that it is always good to be honest, it is your responsibility how to use this suggestion. If you decide to be honest, unnecessarily tell your boss that you don’t like him and get fired, I would not think that I was responsible for that!

When you expect your daughter- or son-in-law to be the same like you, you don’t even give the possibility and freedom to this fresh couple to develop that healthy relationship coming out of two different cultures.
