Yesterday Purnendu told me about an incident in Germany that he saw in TV and today in the morning Thomas sent me an email from Germany, also telling about a 17 year old boy who shot 15 people in a school and afterwards himself. It is not clear yet why this young man did this. In a newspaper article that Ramona read it was written that last Tuesday 11 people were killed in the USA. Why do these things happen? And why especially to young people, teenagers and adolescents? Why do they make this decision and why do they have this violence and aggression inside them?
Of course, the reason will be coming from their environment and the influence that their young mind received. Often nowadays especially young people live under so much pressure. They cannot enjoy what they are doing because they think they have to do it and have to be good or perfect in it. And when they have some free time they cannot think of anything that they would enjoy. They don’t want to be creative because it would be more pressure and they are not guided towards it by anybody.
It is easier if they sit in front of the TV or a video game. There are video games and movies in which this violence is just normal and by watching or playing this they can lose the sense of reality. The pressure which builds inside of them and the scenes that they see make them aggressive. It all comes together and then there is a certain incident which triggers the violence to explode. I feel with every relative and friend of those who lost their lives and I pray for the souls of those who caused their grief. It is one more reason for all of us to be there for each other and love and support each other.

"And when they have some free time they cannot think of anything that they would enjoy. They don't want to be creative because it would be more pressure and they are not guided towards it by anybody." There is something about this statement that is so profound to me. I grew up in the West and this idea really speaks to my experience. We had pressure to perform...so we couldn't even be creative without worrying about how we would perform. It was crippling. Kids just partied because they didn't know what else to do. Others become obsessed with violence I guess. I don't know what the cure to this is but it very much afflicts Western societies.

I have read a few other things you've written about Western culture and you have a really good perspective on what fuels certain behaviors. It has been enlightening for me to read about my culture from the perspective of someone outside it. Makes more sense.

We create an animal for our entertainment and give it pain for the rest of its life. This is not taking care of nature, this is not how we should live. We should think more of the animal than of us. Does the animal like living like this? Can I give the animal everything that it would have in free nature, too?
