Sense of Religious Ruling and Rules - 23 Feb 10

Of course every religion has people who tell others what you should believe in and what is the right thing to do. And then in almost all religions you also can hear from some of these people that you have to believe what they say and you should trust them. Don’t ask why, do not ask for a proof, otherwise they say you are not religious. It doesn’t matter if something is really in the Bible, in the Vedas, in the Koran or any scripture or not but if they say it, you are not allowed to doubt any word they say.

This is how religious people for long time did not want common people to read scriptures, they wanted them to listen just to what they said. If scriptures were in ancient languages like Latin or Sanskrit, they preferred it to be like that. But even when those scriptures were translated, they still claimed that they, and only they, interpreted them in the right way.

Of course this is one of the reasons why in modern times people turn away from institutions like that, they want to be free. What exactly was the reason for creating these communities of religions? It was the natural wish of human to understand life and to know what they should do with their lives. That is what religion provided. People received instructions on what they should and what they should not do.

I do not say that the general idea is wrong, on the contrary, a society or community, the living together of people always needs rules for it to be harmonious. And in former times it was rather religion that gave these rules for behaving than government. I believe it was necessary that religion told people not to steal and not to murder but to work, to be honest and good.

Unfortunately people started forgetting the sense of some rules. Then rules were just rules and people did not see anymore why they had been created which leads to a blind following of rules instead of the understanding of life. And unfortunately it seems that sometimes this was the intention of religious leaders – to have blind followers.

so many things boil down, in a sense, to power and control. People who insist on their rules above all are power hungry. Seems that way to me at least. Social dynamics in religion are no different to me than social dynamics and power-playing in any other arena, whether it's an office or a government (except when power plays are religious it does seem extra-slimy).

Words of Wisdom

  • Addiction

If you only drink in company but don't want to, realize that this urge comes from outside. Why is the outside controlling you and brings you into a situation that you don’t want? Be strong in yourself.

    Source
  • Self-Confidence

Do what you feel is right. Yes, you may need some more courage to face a few more storms than others. It might get uncomfortable sometimes but it would be much more uncomfortable for you to go against what you really want to do.

  • Perfectionism

Perfectionism is perfect if there is no comparison.

    Source
  • Religion

There is proof in the scriptures that shows that the caste system is deeply based in Hinduism. We need to change this religious belief in order to stop the caste system.

    Source
  • Closeness

The base for strengthening an emotional connection is physical closeness. For any close emotional relation you need to be close physically.

  • Religion

Religious belief and superstition can hurt the feelings of your friends.

  • Trust

Give your child your love over your touch. You create a deep trust in this baby that you will be there whatever happens.

  • Relationship

A relationship is something very individual and personal but you definitely need one thing: lots of love.

  • Gurus

If Sanyasis or Sadhus have huge Ashrams and temples, amounts of gold and lots of money and live their lives like big corporate businessmen, what is the difference between them and business people?

  • Nature

We are destroying this world in our egoism and nature shows us exactly that. We need to think of the generations that come after us and not leave them a big mess just because we felt too comfortable and were too lazy to clean up and do something different.

  • Religion

It is impossible to be ‘religious but not superstitious’ because religious scriptures are full of superstition. You cannot separate superstition from religion, its origin. It as a positive sign though, if you think this much - you have taken the first step!
