Bread is best when you eat it fresh! - 26 Jul 10

German Bread

I remember another situation here in Germany which I have experienced more than once. I will tell you of one of these incidents.

We were, as usual, with a family who hosted and organized spiritual healing sessions, meditations and workshops. We always used to eat together and when we came into the kitchen for dinner one day I saw that there was fresh bread. It looked good with different seeds on top and it smelled deliciously of bread that just came out of the oven.

We prepared our food and when we were ready to sit down at the table, the woman who was our host saw that there was still no bread at the table. ‘Oh yes, that bread looks wonderful’ I remembered. However when she came from the kitchen and placed a basket in front of me, I was looking at slices of the bread of which we had eaten yesterday. Our host also sat down and said ‘There is still old bread, we need to finish that first.’ Everybody at the table nodded and started eating.

I still have to laugh about this situation because I was so surprised to see yesterday’s bread there, a little bit hard, more difficult to chew and surely not smelling of freshly baked bread! With time however I got used to this little German behavior that many people have here with bread: you never get to eat it fresh! You are lucky if you manage to finish one loaf of bread because then you know the next day you have a chance of eating fresh! However as Germans are good planners, they take care that in the case you finish one loaf there is a fresh one! You need to finish the old one first though!

Before my German friends now begin remembering how we ate bread together and wonder if I am writing about them, I want to add that this is really very normal here and also nothing very bad. I have seen it everywhere and if I would like to eat the fresh bread very much, I have also said it and will always let you know. Don’t you think it is a funny habit, too?

Of course I laugh about it now but I also think about where this is rooted and what you can do against this. Because it is obvious: you keep yourself from enjoying the wonderful taste of fresh bread. I would say you need to enjoy what you have now! If you do not eat the fresh loaf today, it will also be old tomorrow. Do not buy bread one day and just eat the old one. The next day you will have a great experience: Bread is best when you eat it fresh!

Today we left Tornesch which means we left Jens, Regina and Celina and arrived in Wiesbaden in the afternoon. Goodbyes are always sad but we are not too sad because we will see them soon again in India, in just some months we will meet there again.

That's a funny perception, but it is true. Maybe the german bakehouses should start to produce smaller breads, so that people can buy bread for only one day and thus eat it fresh. I really think this german habit is connected to the fact, that the size of german bread is oversized to eat it as the day progresses.

I just came from England and discovered a weird way of eating bread. When they make toast for breakfast, they have little wracks to let the bread cool before you eat it... so it is hard and cold. But toast is so yummy when it is warm so that butter will melt into the bread! Haha... weird ways, but I learn to respect them.

Mm I love bread. Is this without egg? that's amazing!

Haha this is great. What about baking the next loaf after you run out of bread!

  • Gurus

It is wrong if a guru is not only a person to learn from but someone to worship. When people put pictures of the guru onto their altars and pray for them, when followers wash the feet of the guru and then drink the water, when gurus have their statues made and sell them and when scriptures tell people that they can only be liberated if they have a guru.

  • Enlightenment

Women are taught that their guru is God. You do what God says and whatever God says is right and has a deeper meaning. If God asks you to touch his genitals or if he kisses you, there will be a reason. Some gurus even told their favourite female disciples that they were the chosen ones who will receive enlightenment the fastest.
